LG to launch 13 new phones - all with Windows Platform for easier web access
The new mobile phones will be the first from LG to run on the Windows platform. The imminent launches are the result of a deal signed between LG and Microsoft in February this year. Since then, Windows Mobile has become LG’s main platform for its smartphones. LG has plans to launch a total of 13 new smartphones which run on the Windows platform by the end of next year, including the three handsets which are due to be released in early October. The main advantage to the consumer of the Windows Mobile 6.5 platform is simpler access to the Internet. With an increasing popularity in mobile entertainment and easy access to social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, fast Web access is becoming a crucial feature for new mobile phones. The main competitor to the Windows Mobile platform is the Symbian platform. Symbian is used by Nokia in its mobile phones, and in fact accounts for two-thirds of smartphones globally. Microsoft is hoping its Windows Mobile system will help it compete more effectively with Symbian and, undoubtedly, its deal with LG will be a boost to the company. In addition to the Microsoft deal, LG is developing handsets which are based on Google’s Android software, as the company is also a member of the Symbian Foundation.
